Shoeneck Unk

$6.00 USD

I discovered this fig about 10 years ago in an alley by a large older home in PA Dutch country. It was one of the largest in ground fig trees I have ever come across in the Northeast. The diameter of the tree (bush) was 11 ft!. No branch was this large, but the tree had been sprawling for a long time. This is a very German area. PA Germans did not bring fig trees to Lancaster county. They did not grow them in their native country. According to one local historian, this was a stop on the Underground Railroad. I talked to the caretaker, and he said his family was in charge of the grounds for a hundred years, and there was recorded letters that talked about the tree. It is at least a possibility that the southern slaves knew what fig trees looked like because of their prominence down there. However, most Schoeneck townspeople wouldn't have a clue what a fig tree looked like, so this would be a good landmark. This is all speculation, but it is a good Mt. Etna fig with an interesting story.
