Red currants are a sprightly berry that is wonderful as a juice, jelly, and addition to muffins, breads and scones or eaten fresh. They are sweeter and less resin-y than black currants.
They can tolerate some shade and actually do slightly better in those conditions. They are self-fruitful, hardy and produce in early summer. They are a small shrub, not exceeding 4-5 ft tall. Let the fruit dangle until dead ripe to enjoy the maximum sweetness and flavor of the red currant.
