A member of the rose family, this attractive tree has showy flowers in the spring and in the fall ripens a brown fruit that looks almost like a rose hip. However, after bletting them (allowing them to soften in a paper bag for a week or so), take on a spicy sweet flavor, reminiscent of a winey applesauce. These can be used for fresh eating, preserves, sauces, desserts and more.
